In response to requests for our photo gallery to be reinstated, each month we will feature

four of Ratcliffe's famous and award-winning Paphs through the years.

(Please note:  these Paphs are not currently available)

                                              PARENT:                                                                          PARENT:

PAEONY 'MULBERRY' SM/DOG                             WINSTON CHURCHILL 'INDOMITABLE' FCC/AOS

(Noble x Belissaire)                                                          (Eridge x Hampden)

                                                PROGENY:                                                                       PROGENY:

FRANK PEARCE 'DOWNLAND' AM/AOS                                    FRANK PEARCE 'SARACEN'

(Paeony x Winston Churchill)                                             (Paeony x Winston Churchill)

FRANK PEARCE was originally bred in 1973 in the USA, from Winston Churchill 'Indomitable' FCC/AOS as pod parent crossed with Paeony 'Regency' AM/GMM/RHS-AM/AOS.  The seedlings were mainly in pale rose tones overlaid with raspberry brushing and spotting.  Ratcliffe's remade the cross using as pod parent PAEONY 'MULBERRY', one of their newer remake PAEONY clones which, although it displays the same broad, shapely form, is a taller clone with darker wine-red colouring and was awarded the German Orchid Society's Silver Medal.  This is an example of a good hybridiser's aim:  the original FRANK PEARCE cross has been enhanced by the richer, crimson tones and longer stem of PAEONY 'MULBERRY' and the remake progeny vary widely in their colouring,

from true spotteds and brushed flowers to solid dark reds, all retaining the superb form of the original Ratcliffe hybrid PAEONY.
